Go a little further
Comares is a good base for exploring eastern Málaga and the wider region. These destinations work well as full or half-day trips by car.
🌊 Nerja & Frigiliana
Combine the coast with one of Andalucía's prettiest white villages. Visit the famous Nerja caves and Balcón de Europa, enjoy lunch or a swim by the sea, then drive into the hills to wander through Frigiliana's steep Moorish lanes and flower-covered white houses.
🏛️ Málaga
Spend a day in Málaga exploring the historic centre, Alcazaba, Roman Theatre, cathedral and museums before walking down to the harbour and Muelle Uno. Add lunch in the old town or seafood at the beach for an easy combination of history, shopping and Mediterranean city life.
🕌 Granada & the Alhambra
Granada is one of the great day trips in Andalucía. The Alhambra palace complex is the obvious highlight, but the old Albaicín quarter, cathedral, tapas bars and views toward the Sierra Nevada easily justify a full day. Alhambra tickets should be booked well in advance.
🌉 Ronda
Ronda sits dramatically above the deep El Tajo gorge, crossed by the spectacular Puente Nuevo. Walk through the old town, visit the viewpoints and historic streets, and have lunch overlooking the surrounding mountains. It is a longer drive from Comares, but absolutely worthy of a full-day excursion.
🥾 Caminito del Rey
For something more adventurous, walk the famous Caminito del Rey through the Gaitanes Gorge. The restored walkway follows sheer cliff walls high above the river and is now a properly managed attraction rather than the terrifying improvised death path it was once famous for. Tickets are timed and advance booking is strongly recommended.
🪨 Antequera & El Torcal
Combine historic Antequera with the extraordinary limestone landscape of El Torcal. Explore Antequera's old town and ancient dolmens, then head into the mountains for one of El Torcal's marked walking routes among bizarre weathered rock formations. An excellent choice for history and nature in the same day.
🏖️ Torre del Mar & Caleta de Vélez
For a relaxed day, head down to Torre del Mar for the beach, long promenade, shops and chiringuitos. Walk or drive onward to neighbouring Caleta de Vélez for its fishing harbour and marina. This is the easy option when the day's ambitions extend mainly to swimming, seafood and not climbing anything.
🏔️ Lake Viñuela & the Upper Axarquía
Take a scenic drive through the inland Axarquía around Lake Viñuela, Periana and the surrounding mountain villages. Stop for lunch, explore quiet country roads and enjoy views toward the Sierra de Tejeda. It is a slower, less touristy day out and an excellent way to see the rural landscape beyond Comares.
